Partnership working with Job Centre Plus
A recent case study highlights an excellent example of partnership working to facilitate the return to work of someone claiming Employment Support Allowance. Stephen Gard, 48 from Canvey Island is helping make a real difference to people's lives and has changed his career in the building trade to work as a Care Assistant where he is making a real difference to older people, and those with dementia and stroke injuries in his community. The wake up call for Stephen came after he suffered a head injury and found himself claiming Employment Support Allowance. He had previously worked for 25 years as a Tiller and whilst being unemployed began exploring the possibility of other careers that might be available to him with the help of his New Deal for Disabled People Adviser.

"UNSUNG HEROES IN A CHANGING CLIMATE" - a report by Cambridge Older People Reference Group (COPRG)
In 2007, discussion on the possibility of a community study was undertaken with statutory and voluntary sector service providers. In particular, support and advice was given by the Help the Aged development worker. In 2008, financial support was made available by Skills for Care, Eastern Region for this study to begin. The executive summary gives details of this work where COPRG explored the nature of community groups in which older people are involved. They discovered many of the activities undertaken by the community groups and some knowledge of the people involved in these groups. The executive summary also looks at the emerging implications of workforce development.
The summary report is available here: COPRG report
The full report is available here: COPRG Full Report
Analysis of the questionnaires, focus groups and emerging findings is also available - via email to: Lee.Stribling@skillsforcare.org.uk
With thanks to Dorothy Runnicles and the members of COPRG for this excellent piece of work.
