Department of Health Social Care Recruitment Campaign 2010

The Department of Health is set to launch the latest phase of its campaign to recruit more people to work in social care. Launching on the 8th of February, the campaign is led by the Department of Health in partnership with key organisations including UKHCA, the National Care Association, ADASS and Skills for Care.

From 8th February three different television adverts will appear, one which specifically targets 18-24 year olds. Running until 14th March the adverts are designed to encourage the audience to find out more about jobs in social care. These will be accompanied by additional adverts running in regional publications. Online and regional print advertising will also be used to attract potential candidates.

In response to feedback from the sector, as well as the advertising and national media launch we will be operating 161 local face-to-face events in shopping centres in each Government region across England. Starting on 2nd February and running until 6th March, the events aim to raise awareness and understanding of the range of jobs within the social care sector and what working in social care involves.

1000 Voices Project 'Thank You'

Dear Colleague

As Chair of Skills for Care I wanted to thank you for taking the time to submit a response to our 1000 Voices project and to tell you we are on course to reach our target thanks to your support.

We have a high proportion of fully completed questionnaires which is very pleasing as it will really strengthen our final submission to the Big Care Debate.

If you haven't had the time to fill in all the questions I would be grateful if you could revisit your submission to see if there are any extra areas where you feel you might be able to express a view.

The more responses we have will make sure that the 1000 Voices document reflects what adult social care employers really think about the 'Shaping the Future of Care Together' Green Paper.

Yours truly,

David Croisdale-Appleby
Chair, Skills for Care

1000 Voices Questionnaire:

Skills for Care has decided to launch the 1000 Voices project so we can find out what employers have to say about the Green Paper, and your response will inform our response to that document which we will be submitting in November. There are a number of questions to answer and I hope you take a few minutes to answer as many of them as you can or feel you have an opinion about. We need your response by Thursday 22nd October to give us time to collate your contributions.

I fully realise you are busy but this is a major opportunity to influence government thinking about the shape and funding of adult social care in the future.

I would urge you to support our response to the Big Care Debate by filling in the questionnaire on the Skills for Care website - www.skillsforcare.org.uk/1000voices

"UNSUNG HEROES IN A CHANGING CLIMATE" - a report by Cambridge Older People Reference Group (COPRG)

In 2007, discussion on the possibility of a community study was undertaken with statutory and voluntary sector service providers. In particular, support and advice was given by the Help the Aged development worker. In 2008, financial support was made available by Skills for Care, Eastern Region for this study to begin. The executive summary gives details of this work where COPRG explored the nature of community groups in which older people are involved. They discovered many of the activities undertaken by the community groups and some knowledge of the people involved in these groups. The executive summary also looks at the emerging implications of workforce development.

This report is available here: COPRG report

Analysis of the questionnaires, focus groups and emerging findings is also available - via email to: Lee.Stribling@skillsforcare.org.uk

With thanks to Dorothy Runnicles and the members of COPRG for this excellent piece of work.
